Bodyweight Squats: Position Before Depth

When a bodyweight squat feels awkward, lowering farther is not always the answer. The movement uses the thighs and glutes to help bend and straighten the hips and knees, while the trunk helps you stay balanced. A comfortable, repeatable range gives you a clearer way to practice the position before adding depth.

Set Your Stance

Stand with your feet around shoulder-width apart, then turn your toes out slightly if that feels natural for your hips. Spread your weight across the heel, base of the big toe, and base of the little toe so your feet remain grounded. Look ahead, keep your torso relaxed but steady, and choose a depth where you can maintain balance.

Lower and Stand Smoothly

Begin by bending your hips and knees together, sending your hips back and down as your knees track in the same general direction as your toes. Keep your whole foot in contact with the floor and lower only as far as you can without losing control of your trunk or feet. Press through the floor to stand, allowing your hips and knees to straighten together. Move slowly enough to notice where your balance shifts.

Common Squat Mistakes

If your heels lift, reduce the depth and check whether your stance feels too narrow or your weight is shifting toward your toes. If your knees collapse inward, pause, reset, and guide them toward the direction of your toes as you stand. Rushing down or dropping into the bottom can make it harder to keep your feet planted, so use a range that stays smooth and repeatable.
